Clouds Over Gurbet
Immigration Stories in the Shadow of the Steelworks
In celebration of the city's 800th anniversary, we conducted interviews with people who came to Peine from Turkey. The conversations revolve around life in the neighborhood of the Peine steelworks and the "Gurbet Türküleri," Turkish songs about life in a foreign land. The audio walk narrates the recent history of the city of Peine from a post-migrant perspective: What does it mean to arrive anew in a foreign place? What new connections are formed? And what kind of home is Peine for them today? At various stations in Peine, the walk weaves together the stories of the people with songs about Gurbet into a multifaceted narrative in both German and Turkish.
A project by Syndikat Gefährliche Liebschaften in collaboration with Ömer Bayram and Mara May, and in cooperation with the Peine District Museum.
