Workers, Alps, and Props – an audio walk about the Berlin Trade Exhibition of 1896
Listing Overview
The audio walk narrates the story of the "Failed World's Fair," the Berlin Trade Exhibition of 1896. Due to construction work in the park, the original route of the audio walk has been altered, so there will be some short sections where you won't hear anything. As listeners traverse the exhibition grounds, they become companions and accomplices to three protagonists. They immerse themselves in the cultural life of the burgeoning industrial metropolis of Berlin and gain insight into the lives and concerns of its residents. By exploring the historical setting of the story, today's Treptower Park, the audio walk delves into a forgotten chapter of Berlin's history. At the trade exhibition, visitors, in an era without cinema or mass tourism, could indulge in pure pleasure and the illusion of traveling to the farthest corners of the world. The colonial exhibition, ethnographic shows, military events, and other attractions at the trade exhibition reveal the nationalist, imperialist, and colonialist tendencies of the German Empire. This immersive audio play brings history into the present. Mareike Beykirch voices the role of Clara, Christoph Gawenda that of Hans, Steffen Scheumann plays Julius, and Caroline Böttcher provides the introduction and commentary. The concept, script, direction, dramaturgy, and editing are by Caroline Böttcher, with dramaturgical consulting by Jacob Hauptmann, and sound by Insa Schwartz and Jacob Hauptmann.
