Listing Overview

The audio walk was created on behalf of the Kunstmuseum Bonn for the group exhibition "The Flaneur: From Impressionism to the Present." Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Man of the Crowd," the audio walk explores the theme of flânerie from a feminist perspective and introduces four alternative figures from art and literature—Sophie Calle, Alice in Wonderland, Martha Quest, and Marcel Duchamp's Rrose Sélavy—as potential female flâneurs. Participants are guided through the museum's surroundings while listening to their stories.

"When we think of the woman in the crowd, walking among other people, does she ever turn around and look back? Does she suddenly have distinct features, a personality, an identity? What if she were the flâneur, or rather the flâneuse? One who is not relegated to the periphery? One who charts her own path, with her own desires and longings? Is it even possible to conceive of a figure that transcends this binary opposition of established gender norms?"
