Originally established as a workers' settlement during the period of war preparation, the Mattenberg settlement was used to house freed forced laborers in the immediate aftermath of the war. Later, it provided affordable housing for what were then called guest workers. The recently built mosque is now also a sign that many have since found a new home here. The surrounding landscape has also received a new feature: a large hill running parallel to the highway is an artificial earth mound and represents the latest layer of this suburban landscape. However, as is often the case, names and terms can narrow our perspective. Thus, Mattenberg is more likely to be discovered upon a second glance, and the term "noise barrier" similarly obscures the view of this suburban landscape.
