Listing Overview

Same place – different time: The audio walk by Leipzig artist Diana Wesser, commissioned by the City of Leipzig, conveys the history of Matthäikirchhof from the Urbs Libzi, through the vanished Matthäikirche, to the partially vacant concrete block of the former Stasi district administration. Through audio play miniatures featuring numerous experts and contemporary witnesses, you are invited to immerse yourself in the various overlapping time layers of the area and discover the place with new eyes in this acoustic history lab.

History is not linear, and neither is this audio walk. The tracks can be listened to in any order. Each track is a self-contained audio piece. The audio walk does not claim to be exhaustive; there is much more history and historical layers waiting to be told and discovered in this area. A continuation is not ruled out.

Not all locations are continuously accessible; between 10 AM and 6 PM, all doors and gates should be open. There are no stairs on the paths, but the buildings are not fully accessible. The conversation partners mentioned in the track texts are listed in the order of their "appearance." The memorial museum in the "Runde Ecke" currently presents the open-air exhibition "From the Castle to the Stasi Headquarters" on the facade of the former Stasi new building at the height of the Klingertreppe.

The audio walk is part of the development project at Matthäikirchhof. As part of a comprehensive participation process – managed by the Coordination Office for Citizen Participation and Civic Engagement "Leipzig weiter denken" – Leipzig residents have had the opportunity since 2021 to actively participate in the debate about the future development of the area.
