Listing Overview

Kurt Mühlenhaupt was a painter, sculptor, writer, and bon vivant who lived and worked in the West Berlin district of Kreuzberg from 1958 to 1975. He was also known as a junk dealer and pub owner, and was a true character about whom many great stories are told. In this audio walk, you can follow his traces in Kreuzberg, accompanied by his texts, which are recited by Katharina Thalbach with her unmistakable voice.

The Kurt Mühlenhaupt Museum at Fidicinstraße 40, the starting or ending point of this audio guide, is dedicated to the artistic legacy of our protagonist. In the permanent exhibition, you can admire the artist's oil paintings, graphics, and sculptures, and chat with the museum staff over a coffee. You might even take home a print or an art book by Kurt Mühlenhaupt. Explore the winding courtyards of the former Wittenbecher brewery and factory, which today house several theaters and where painters, musicians, composers, and film producers work in their studios and workshops.

The audio walk includes 18 stations and takes you in two hours from the museum through Chamissoplatz, the Bergmannkiez, to Hallesches Tor, or vice versa. If you have time, we recommend a detour through the cemeteries between Zossener Straße and Mehringdamm. At the "Jerusalem" audio station, you will receive an introduction to this place where many prominent figures and "originals" are buried, including the poets E.T.A. Hoffmann and Adalbert von Chamisso, the salonnière Rahel Varnhagen, Rudi Lesser, and Kurt Mühlenhaupt himself, as well as his brother Willi, whom you will get to know at the "Uncle Willi, a True Naïve" audio station.

Enjoy your walk and have a great time with Kurt Mühlenhaupt's stories!
