Listing Overview

From honorary graves to pauper's graves, including veggie epitaphs and the hard-fought battle for cremation: the tour provides an insight into the history of vegetarianism in Vienna from its beginnings around 1870 to 1945, and an overview of the burial traditions at one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. The Vienna Central Cemetery is open to visitors who wish to walk, cycle, stroll, take photographs, or tour the cemetery. However, please keep in mind that the cemetery is primarily a place of remembrance and commemoration, so behave quietly and respectfully, especially near grave visitors.

The tour lasts approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The best way to reach the Vienna Central Cemetery is by tram 71 or 6, which will take you from Simmering, the terminus of the U3, to the main entrance of the cemetery at Gate 2. Please be sure to note the cemetery's opening hours and plan accordingly. From November through February, the cemetery is open from 8 AM to 5 PM; in March and October, from 7 AM to 6 PM; and from April to September, from 7 AM to 7 PM, with extended hours on holidays and Thursdays in the summer. If you happen to miss the closing time and get locked in, call the police (133), who have a key.
