Listing Overview

Dear walkers, I would not recommend a tour if there were any danger. However, since the region around Jerusalem has been considered a crisis area for decades, I suggest consulting the Foreign Office's website and closely following their travel recommendations for the region. The Foreign Office particularly notes that tensions rise around the fasting month of Ramadan and the Easter holidays.

Nevertheless, some travel companies continue to offer trips to Jerusalem, including as a day destination for cruise ships. If you prepare well, follow local recommendations, stay in a group, and avoid large crowds, the risk is manageable.

This tour takes about 1.5 hours, circling around and through the Old City of Jerusalem, stopping at interesting spots that are not necessarily crowded but rather hidden gems not found in every travel guide. Along the way, let yourself be enchanted by the colors, sounds, and smells of this city, and feel free to try local delicacies like freshly pressed pomegranate juice, the fresh ring-shaped bread called Kake, or a tea.

The Old City in Jerusalem is vibrant and dynamic, loud, and almost chaotic to German eyes. However, with some patience towards the insistent shopkeepers and a bit of flexibility, you can navigate it well. Appropriate clothing (shoulders covered, men in closed shoes and long pants) is advisable in the traditional quarters of the Old City, even though in the liberal Israeli West part, you might see model-like individuals dressed quite freely. Carrying some drinking water is helpful, but it can be purchased everywhere.

The tour is by no means barrier-free, but it is definitely exciting and adventurous. From fully veiled Bedouin women in burqas to highly equipped and heavily armed female soldiers, from barefoot monks in robes to singing Brazilians carrying man-sized crosses – anything is possible. Tourists, market vendors, children, country women, and fanatics of all religions.
