Listing Overview

The organic sediment peat played a significant role in the development of the Findorff district. In the 18th and 19th centuries, peat was used as a fuel. To meet the growing demand in the expanding city of Bremen, peat was primarily imported from the surrounding Teufelsmoor, which was being colonized at that time by Jürgen Christian Findorff. The new settlers transported the fuel via a network of canals on peat barges to Bremen, where it was sold at specially constructed peat harbors.

Today, peat is no longer used as a fuel, and the Findorff peat harbor no longer serves as a trading post. However, traces of this era can still be found in the district, starting with the name of the district itself, which is named after the moor colonizer. These traces continue to shape Findorff. On the audio walk, you can follow some of these traces and discover them for yourself.
