Listing Overview

"Stories Among Us" is an audio walk on Berlin's rubble hills that brings to life the memories of eyewitnesses from World War II. The walk is based on the life stories of Christel, Thea, and Karl-Heinz, who experienced the war in Berlin from a youthful perspective. They played in the streets, witnessed the deportation of Jews, cared for their sick parents, endured in air-raid shelters, had to dig trenches, or were sent to war as anti-aircraft helpers. These narratives were captured by artist Sonya Schönberger through interviews and edited together with Norbert Lang. Three young actors, aged 16 to 18, the same age as the eyewitnesses during the war, voice the stories. This creates acoustic and narrative friction as well as new spaces for identification for future generations.

The stories also serve as documents of an object history of World War II: they recount weapons, bombs, shells, the last belongings of Jewish people, the equipment of air-raid shelters, and the rubble in the ruins of houses. The audio walk points to these layers of objects, some of which still circulate today, some lie beneath the city's surface, and some are visible and tangible on the rubble hills created after the war. The audio walks take place on three rubble hills in Berlin: Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg (Oderbruchkippe), the Insulaner in Schöneberg, and Humboldthöhe in Wedding.

The audio walk was produced by Sonya Schönberger and Norbert Lang, and narrated by Max Schimmelpfennig, Pauline Werner, and Isabella Hölzer.
