Listing Overview

The Rothsteinmoor Nature Reserve, covering an area of only about 9 hectares, is one of the smallest nature reserves in Hamburg-Langenhorn, near the airport. The remnants of a once extensive raised bog landscape are protected from harmful intrusion by an impassable water ditch. There are several beautiful viewpoints along the nature reserve and near the airport's runway. Because this area is somewhat off the beaten path, it is considered a hidden gem and is not always known even to many long-time Langenhorn residents.

The area was granted protected status on October 20, 2009, and is managed by NABU. In addition to rare plants like the bog myrtle, which is on the red list, birds can also be observed from elevated viewpoints. This nature reserve serves as a connection between various green habitats, such as the Krohnstieg retention basin, where the Langenhorn streams Tarpenbek and Bornbach meet, both of which have kingfisher populations, as well as the surrounding wooded pastures and green spaces around the Langenhorn Youth Park.

Those arriving without their own car or with parking between the Krohnstieg and Ermlandweg stops (12 bays available) can join the tour directly at Station 5.
