Listing Overview

"In Stone Carved. Digitally Accessible Memory Discourses in the Urban Space of Lower Saxony and Eastern Europe" is a transnational, digital exhibition project focused on material memory culture. It was initiated by the Department of Medieval and Modern History at the University of Göttingen, the Chair of Modern History and Historical Migration Research at the University of Osnabrück, the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the University of Latvia in Riga, the History Workshop Minsk, and the Cultural Heritage of Lower Saxony, and funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.

Six project partners from four locations in three countries created a joint website. Students and researchers documented monuments in Göttingen, the Friedland Museum, Minsk, Osnabrück, and Riga as digital three-dimensional models and investigated the history of these memorial sites and the events they commemorate.

Thematically, we explored how and what injustices are remembered in public urban spaces through monuments. The range of topics included antisemitism and the exclusion of Jewish people from public life in the 1920s, the crimes of National Socialist perpetrators and their collaborators, and the commemoration of acts by the Soviet regime in the post-war period.

Methodologically, we experimented with how the use of affordable or free digital tools can make the narration of history and the remembrance of the past more participatory and transnational. The results of this research process were developed into a digital exhibition and a digital city tour with the support of the Cultural Heritage of Lower Saxony.

As a trinational project based in Lower Saxony, we provide all contributions in this tour in both German and English, with the contributions from Riga and Minsk additionally available in Latvian and Belarusian.
