Listing Overview

The audio walk invites listeners to explore the surroundings of the Plagwitz train station in Leipzig and discover its hidden sound treasures. Listeners simply start the audio recording, follow the route, and uncover the concealed sound locations. The images provide clues on how to find and use these spots. Listeners can enjoy the composition that incorporates these sounds or pause the recording to create their own musical interpretation using recommended urban instruments. The audio walk encourages listeners to interact with their environment and expand their perception of urban musicality.

SPACE–WE–SPACE. is a binaural sound composition that explores the city as music. It creates an impossible space that reflects on changes by mixing existing and non-existing sounds. The boundary between reality and fiction shifts as sounds open and close different worlds. Everyday noises in a post-industrial area now used for leisure activities become extraordinary through a shift in perspective.

The composition is the result of a live experiment for the Radiolab at the Seanaps Festival 2019. While Lena Löhr and Martina Weber guided two groups through a sound walk, Carina Pesch moved between these groups as a microphone on two legs, capturing hidden resonances and traces of human interactions with the environment. She streamed these sounds to the temporary studio, where JD Zazie modulated and composed them in real-time before broadcasting. This two-hour composition was revised by Carina Pesch into a one-hour piece and then mapped for an audio walk. The recordings were made with a set of binaural microphones and a contact microphone, making it perfect for an audio walk, which is typically experienced with headphones.
