Listing Overview

Tahiti and the South Seas were once considered paradise on Earth. Captain James Cook set out to circumnavigate and explore the South Seas, and on board was the young Georg Forster. His report, "A Voyage Round the World," quickly became a global success. But what do explorers discover? Landscapes. In 1987, Lucius Burckhardt's science of strolling reconstructed Georg Forster's "Journey to Tahiti" in the Dönche nature reserve near Kassel. Surprisingly, his descriptions of the paradisiacal island of Tahiti also matched this landscape of a former military training ground. On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary, this audio walk now reconstructs the "original stroll" of the science of strolling. The same texts, spoken by the same actor, can be heard again at the same locations. Additional listening stations provide insights into the updated question, "Why is landscape beautiful?" The starting point is the "Westfriedhof" bus stop on line 24. On Sundays and public holidays, line 24 runs infrequently, so the alternative "Süsterfeld" stop on line 4 is recommended. From there, it is a 15-minute walk to the Westfriedhof stop. The concept was developed by Bertram Weisshaar and Frank Lorberg in 2017. Production and audio mastering were carried out by Bertram Weisshaar. The texts by Georg Forster are read by Peter Lüchinger, the texts by Lucius Burckhardt by Christian Bergmann, and the moderation is done by Claudia Euen. Special thanks go to Klaus Hoppe and Monika Nikolic for the photos, Irene Grillo and Dominik Gross for the interview with Annemarie Burckhardt, and to SFR and Karin Salm for the interview with Lucius Burckhardt.
