Listing Overview
The Stolpertonsteine is a project by Marta Werner and Sarah Dannhäuser in collaboration with the Hamburg State Center for Political Education and the Institute for the History of German Jews. The project aims to create audio recordings of the biographies associated with the Stolpersteine laid in Hamburg. The basis for these recordings are the biographies researched and published as part of the project "Stolpersteine in Hamburg – A Biographical Search for Traces." These biographies, along with the personal written records of the victims and their families, have been narrated by professional voice actors and combined with contemporary soundscapes. The ambient sounds create an acoustic space of Hamburg, serving as a backdrop for the voices of the victims. This creates a bridge between the voices of the past and the sounds of the present. The memories of the crimes of National Socialism can thus be experienced not only visually on the streets of Hamburg but also audibly. With a click, the voices and stories behind each Stolperstein become accessible. The Stolpertonsteine offer a new way to experience and transmit history in the digital age.
