After the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986, radioactive radiation reached the Oderbruch not only as a cloud but also on wheels: on trucks, cars, and trains. Under great secrecy, the vehicles were washed when crossing the border into the GDR. One of the washing stations was located near the freight station in Kietz, at the then-border with Poland. While rumors circulated on the German side that people had died of cancer due to their contact with the contaminated trains, it seems that on the Polish side, there was no knowledge of the washings or the contaminated vehicles. How dangerous was the radiation, what protective measures were in place, and where did the contaminated water go? The audio walk reconstructs the system of secrecy, control, and cover-up that existed in the GDR, which deliberately obscured the dangers posed by the reactor disaster.

The audio walk is divided into three chapters: Küstrin-Kietz, Neu Manschnow, and Kostrzyn. These are designed as independent narratives and tours that can be walked. Since the three locations are relatively far apart, it is advisable to use a bicycle, car, or public transportation in between.

Chapter 1: Küstrin-Kietz - An Outrageous Rumor. The route is 1.5 km, starting at the Küstrin Kietz station forecourt. The duration is approximately 30 minutes.

Chapter 2: Neu Manschnow - The Washing of the Trains. The route is 1 km, starting at the Oderdeich (access via Ausbau West). The duration is approximately 30 minutes.

Chapter 3: Kostrzyn - What I Don't Know... The route is 2 km, starting at the Kostrzyn station (Track 1). The duration is approximately 30 minutes.
