Listing Overview

In the 1970s, there was a shortage of affordable housing in Frankfurt am Main. In the Westend district of the city, many large old buildings and villas that had survived World War II were still standing. However, the city planned to transform the neighborhood into a commercial and business center with new, very tall buildings. During this time, the old buildings were occupied by people from diverse cultural, political, and social backgrounds. Vacant houses were also taken over. These individuals lived in communal arrangements and intended to stay. With utopian ideas in their minds and anger in their hearts, they learned through practical experience how to occupy houses. Their antagonists were the police, the city, property owners, and so-called speculators.

The narrative voice of Cornelia Niemann guides the audio walk, while contemporary witnesses such as Linda de Vos, Michael Krawinkel, Gerd Koenen, Gernot Grumbach, Guiseppe Cavallaro, and Fransesco Salantino share their memories. The audio walk was developed by Julia Mihály (sound design and production), Katja Kämmerer, and Jan Deck (interviews with contemporary witnesses, structure, and concept). The project was funded by the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt am Main and the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art.
