Stories of Vanished Places in the Pottery Town of Kohren-Sahlis
In almost every community, there are once significant places that are no longer visible and whose original use has been forgotten. Kohren-Sahlis, with its 1000-year history, is no exception, featuring numerous such locations. The two mighty towers of the castle ruins hint at the town's former importance. Kohren is first mentioned in 1271 as a "civitas" (a larger, town-like place). By 1453 at the latest, selected citizens had municipal rights, and Kohren was long the seat of a court.
Potters, brewers, millers, and weavers shaped the life of the small town. In the 18th century, quarries and manufactories were added. Thanks to the railway, Kohren became a popular excursion destination in the 20th century, leading to the establishment of many inns. An active citizenry enlivened the town with clubs, festivals, and theater performances.
Today, many of these sites have disappeared, are used differently, or stand abandoned. Our tour tells the stories of these places to preserve them from being forgotten. More detailed information and additional photos can be found on our website www.geschichtsverein-kohren.de. We wish you an enjoyable journey through the lost places of Kohren-Sahlis.
