Of Dance Halls and Clubs. Homosexual Life in Schöneberg in the 1920s.
Listing Overview
The audio walk takes you through the Berlin district of Schöneberg in the 1920s. After the collapse of the German Empire, art and culture flourished. At least in the big cities, this seemed to make a more self-determined life possible. Numerous pubs, clubs, and bars opened, and magazines reached high circulation numbers. Many activists organized themselves into political homosexual associations. However, societal rejection of homosexuality persisted, as did its legal criminalization. In a research project conducted in 2012, various sources were compiled, and a radio play was produced. The resulting audio guide provides information on 12 different locations of the scene at that time.
