In 1904, Ålesund was almost completely destroyed by a fire. During the reconstruction, the city acquired its current appearance. The facades of most newly constructed buildings were designed in the Art Nouveau style, and Ålesund is rightly considered the Art Nouveau city and one of the most beautiful cities in Norway.
